I particularly like the story about being invited by Mitterand three
times, and three times refusing. It has almost a fairlytale quality to
it. There's a lesson there about preserving one's autonomy. An ethics
of practice. Not in the moralistic sense so common in the United
States. Something a little more nuanced.
